Onion has always been one of my favorite ingredients. As we saw in a previous recipe, we can cook it as caramelized onion, which can be used for dishes like Spanish omelette with caramelized onion or included in our salads to enhance their flavor, and it can also be eaten raw, alternating bites between fried anchovies or spoonfuls of a delicious cocido madrileño.

In this case, I bring you a recipe that you cannot miss: crispy fried onion or dehydrated onion, which has become very popular due to large shopping centers like IKEA, and that any fast food lover, whether hot dogs, beef burgers or chicken burgers, cannot help but include.

It won't take you more than 10 minutes to prepare, just be patient to let it cool for about 2 minutes and then it will be yours forever (or until you finish it!).

Ingredients for Crispy Fried Onions for 2 people

  • Onion – 1 unit
  • Flour – 1 tablespoon
  • Olive oil – 1 splash
  • Salt – 1 pinch

How to make the recipe Crispy Fried Onions

  1. Peel the onion. If you can't stand crying while cutting it, I'll tell you a trick: put it in the freezer for 5 minutes before chopping it. Afterward, you won't shed a single tear. Once peeled, cut it in half, but not horizontally, rather vertically.
  2. Take one of the two resulting halves of the onion and lay it face down. Now, make cuts along about 0.5 centimeters and then cut the pieces transversely, about 0.5 centimeters as well. This way, we get small onion cubes perfect for the recipe we're going to cook. This is called cutting in a brunoise style (small cubes).
  3. Once the onion is chopped, salt it and place the pieces in a plastic bag, like the ones used for freezing, or in a container. Add the tablespoon of flour and shake it so that all the onion cubes are evenly coated.
  4. Heat a splash of oil in a frying pan, enough to cover the thickness of the onion pieces. When it's hot, add the onions and fry them. Keep stirring to ensure they cook evenly. Once they start to brown (important not to burn them), remove from heat and transfer them to a colander to drain well and release as much oil as possible.
  5. Now, place absorbent kitchen paper on a tray and spread out all the drained onion pieces to cool, making sure they don't stick together.

Notes and Tips

In these simple steps, we have made crispy fried onion or dehydrated onion, which can be stored in well-sealed glass jars and kept in the fridge, although if you plan to consume them soon, you can store them in a pantry.
